The definitions below are offered as a resource to support your understanding of some of the patterns, behaviours, and dynamics associated with gender-based violence that may be explored in the project.
Gender Based Violence (GBV)

Violence based on gender norms and unequal power dynamics, perpetrated against someone based on their gender, gender expression, gender identity, or perceived gender. It takes many forms, including physical, economic, sexual, as well as emotional (psychological) abuse, coercion, non-state torture and femicide. (National Action Plan to End GBV, 2021.) Gender-based violence disproportionately impacts women, girls, and Two Spirit, trans, and non-binary people and is deeply rooted in patriarchy and other systems of oppression like racism, misogyny, heterosexism, colonialism, class, caste, etc. (Source: Canadian Women’s Foundation and from Feminist Action Lab)
Coercion

A pattern of behaviours to assert control over a person through repeated acts that disempower the other person through fear for the safety of self or others, removal of rights and liberties or fear of this removal, by isolating them from sources of support, exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain, removing the victim’s rights and liberties, depriving them of the means needed for independence, resistance, and escape, and regulating their everyday behaviour.
Sexualized Violence

Engagements range from two weeks for focused audits to several months for comprehensive transformation.a sexual act or behaviour without consent. It includes sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual exploitation. It can be physical, emotional, verbal, online or in person.
Cyber Misogyny
